Made to cut well, made to last

Toyama Hamono was founded in 1861 in Sanjo, a city in Niigata Prefecture with a long tradition of metalworking. Rooted in the art of tanzo (traditional forging), we continue to make shears built for real, everyday use.

We do not make tools for display. We make tools that cut cleanly, sit comfortably in your hand, and grow more reliable with every season. That belief guides everything we do — from the steel we choose to the final adjustment before a pair of shears leaves our workshop.

Sharpness, control, and feel

To us, a good edge is not only about sharpness on paper. It is about how the blade enters the branch or stem, how smoothly it moves through the cut, and how much control the user feels in the hand.

That is why we pay close attention to balance, blade contact, and finishing. A good tool should cut cleanly and move smoothly, without asking for more force than it should.

Finished by hand

Every pair of Toyama Hamono shears is finished by hand, one at a time. That means fine adjustments no factory line can replicate — the way the blades meet, the smoothness of the pivot, the overall balance when you pick them up. These details may seem small, but you notice them the moment you make your first cut.

Made for years of use

Our tools are not made to be replaced — they are made to stay. With proper care, a pair of our shears will serve you for many years. And as the handle wears to the shape of your grip and the action settles into a familiar rhythm, the tool becomes uniquely yours. We believe that is part of what makes a good tool worth owning.

Recognized for design and performance

Toyama Hamono's work has been recognized both in Japan and internationally. Examples include the Good Design Award and the Sustainable Garden Product of the Show at the 2023 Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show.
We value these recognitions because they acknowledge not only visual beauty, but also sharpness, ease of use, and careful craftsmanship.

Looking ahead

We do not preserve the past for its own sake. We carry it forward — in the form of tools whose value you can feel in your hand, every day.

Backed by experience. Polished by hand. Built to be used. Made to last. That is the Toyama Hamono way, and it always will be.
